mondo pop 4
This month’s covers stars are Italo-pop legends, @matia_bazar_official. Fronted by the insanely powerful voice of Antonella Ruggiero, they found success in the late 70s, representing Italy in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1979 with ‘Raggio di luna’. But it was in the 80s that they really hit their stride, and it’s their all-time classic, Ti Sento, that we feature on this episode, as part of an 80s Europop set that also features tracks from @nena_official and @etienne.daho .
Ti Sento (also covered by Scooter but let’s not go there) is a classic piece of insanely dramatic Italian disco-pop, full of bombast, soaring vocals and genius 80s production. If you ever wondered what inspired the Pet Shop Boys, wonder no more. Italo disco and pop was at its zenith in the 80s and this is surely one of its finest moments.
Our Mondo Moment is a blistering track from the Godfather of Korean Rock, Shin Joong Hyun, that got him into deep water with the government. The power of pop can truly be a dangerous thing…
