mondo pop 2
Our cover star for mondo pop 2 is also our show’s Mondo Moment: Akofa Akoussah, who was a singer from Togo in West Africa. Her startlingly rich and beautiful eponymous debut album in 1976, issued by a Parisian record label, caused quite a stir in African music circles, and let to a growing interest in Togolese artists and music.
I’ve only just discovered the album in the last month and I have become nothing short of obsessed with it. From that album, I’ve chosen ‘Ramer Sans Rame’ for the show, a song that sounded naggingly familiar to me - and, as it turns out, came from the other side of the world. Find out more when you give the show a listen.
Also featured is some Cambodian rock old and new, some Swedish sophisto-pop and a Rolling Stones cover on the sitar…
